HAPPY HOLIDAYS

As we all head off in different directions to enjoy the holidays with friends and family, the Lakeview IMC staff would like to wish all of you a wonderful holiday season. If you get a chance, take a look at our top ten list of books we've read this year in the What's New on the Book Shelves blog and share your list with now or when we return to school on January 7th.

CAUDILL AWARD PROGRAM BEGINS

On Monday I introduced the 6th graders to the Rebecca Caudill Young Readers Book Award for 2013. 6th graders will be eligible to vote for this award in late February by reading or listening to 3 of the 20 nominated books. Using the Mimio technology I booktalked all 20 books within a period. With a separate frame for each title, I used reveal frames to hide the book cover, genre, main characters, and a one sentence summary. As I talked about the book, I revealed this information one at a time to the students. Students had a sheet listing all the books with a column for notes and were instructed to choose 5 or 6 titles that sounded interesting as potential books to read. While the IMC has multiple copies of all the books, it often happens that the wanted book is not available when a student is ready for it. The next 3 book reports for 6th grader will be books from the Caudill 2013 list, thus making students eligible to vote. For each book students will take an Accelerated Reader quiz as part of their book report. I encouraged the students to be educated voters and read as many titles as they can. We have a 2013 Club in the IMC that honors anyone who has read all 20 titles from the 2013 list by the end of the school year. Mrs. Wilson and I are founders of this club (even though we don't get to vote) as we read all 20 books to better help students in making selections, but any student in any grade is welcome to join us. The complete list of nominees can be found with a link on the Lakeview Library webpage. Mrs. Wilson and I agree that all 2013 nominees are winners.
